Treated or untreated Pine for bedhead?

I'm planning on making a built-in bedhead with 90x45mm pine for the framing along with some VJ paneling for the front. Likely use some oak timber for the top of the bedhead and match with some bedside tables which I'm planning to fix to the bedhead so they're 'floating' in a sense.

Hi @dabroa,

That untreated Pine would be the way to go. It's best not to use treated timber in items like bedheads. The fewer chemicals around where you sleep, the better.

Hi again,

Only just getting around to this project now and noticed Bunnings stores here in WA don't stock the 90x45mm untreated pine and don't seem to have the 70x45mm size either. This is what the website says anyway.

Do you have any idea why this might be?

In short, timber ranges vary by state and even by store because they are supplied by different local mills and stocked based on local demand. In WA, untreated pine in those sizes is often not a standard ranged item.

Your best option is to ask at the Special Orders counter or the Trade Desk in store, as they may be able to order untreated timber in for you, even if it is not normally stocked.

Alternatively, you could use the DAR pine to create your frame. If you can let me know the height, width, and depth of the frame, I can show you how to use 19mm thick timber to create it. For a beadhead, you don't really need structural framing timber of that calibre.

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks for your response. The bedhead is approx 3.6m wide, 1.2m high and 120mm deep. The depth can vary really, was just assuming 120mm to suit the 90mm frame + VJ lining + slight overhang of the timber shelf on top. The idea is to have a shelf on top (something like an Oak timber) so we assumed 120mm would be sufficient.

These 70 x 35mm 2.4m Short Pine KD are untreated, are available in WA and would be fine for use in a bedhead. Do you think they would work with your materials and the shelf you are hoping to install?
