Re: Understairs door Installations what type of wood can be used ???

Hello @antothom

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about what type of wood to use for your understairs framing.

I suggest using 70 x 35mm Framing MGP10 H2 Blue Pine 2.4m for framing. You can then cover the timber framing with either plywood or plaster board. I'm sorry but the framing timber does not come pre-painted.

In regards to the door, it's possible to build your door using the same type of timber

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Understairs door Installations what type of wood can be used ???

Hello @antothom

Both type of timbers will provide good coverage. The only advantage of MDF is that it has a smooth surface unlike plywood that has a pitted surface that needs filling to become smooth.

It's possible to use concealed hinges, I suggest using Hafele Hinges in combination with Taskmaster 75mm Push To Open System - 2 Pack. But I suggest drawing your plans on paper first so that you can double check your measurements and determine the amount of materials you'll need.

In regards to the size of the door, I suggest putting in a standard size width of 800mm. You can make it smaller, but your shoulders might get in the way when entering the storage area.

Here are some fantastic under stair storage projects our Workshop members have shared.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Understairs door Installations what type of wood can be used ???

Hi @antothom,

Wallpaper is designed to go over plasterboard. You'll need to do a test section to determine whether the wallpaper adhesive will adhere correctly to the timber. I'd imagine it will adhere reasonably well to either plywood or MDF.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
