I repaired an old chest of drawers before adding some timber trim, new drawer handles and a fresh coat of bold paint.
Square timber trim 6x6MM 2.4M (I/N 0497588)
Taubmans 'Admiralty' semi gloss paint
Wood glue
Gold drawer handles
Sandpaper
Multi purpose filler
Paint brush, roller and tray.
Pencil and ruler
Ryobi ONE + Mitre saw
Sander
Clamps
Firstly, I reattached the broken off piece of timber with wood glue and clamped it for 24hrs.
Once dry, I gave the fronts of each drawer a sand to remove any sheen from the paint so that the glue would adhere better, then I gave them a wipe down.
Next, I measured and marked out a border 10mm in from the edge of each drawer and kept note of the horizontal and vertical measurements.
I used a mitre saw to make 45° angle cuts to the timber trim - two horizontal pieces and two vertical pieces per drawer using the measurements for the lengths.
I placed the pieces on the drawers with the outer edge of the trim sitting on the drawn lines and I made sure they fitted right before gluing. Once I was happy with the placement, I glued down the trim with wood glue and clamped the pieces for 24hours. I used a multi purpose filler to fix any gaps and once dry, gave them a light sand.
Since the drawers where already painted white, I didn't apply an undercoat. I applied two coats of another shade of blue which I didn't end up liking so I chose the shade of Taubmans Admiralty which I was happy with.
Lastly, attach the new handles.
Hello @KellieN
Those timber trims really add so much personality to the chest of drawers. The blue colour and gold knobs really bring it all together creating an engaging modern look.
Thank you for sharing such an excellent project.
Eric
Thankyou Eric, adding the timber trim is such a cost effective way to improve the appearance of any set of drawers.
