How to repair back fence?

Hi all,

I am hoping to repair or replace our back fence and gate as some parts of the wood is starting to rot. As much as possible I'd like to re-use components (especially the metal poles, maybe even the gate?)

Are there any guides / resources available that can assist in the process of disassembling and refreshing this fence? Or are there other ways to more easily repair the sections where the wood has begun to rot?

Hi @lm4,

With re-use in mind most of that looks OK.

That post must be replaced.

Where the boards have come adrift drive in new timber countersink screws (hex or square drive).

Do the same for all the others boards if they don't feel secure (lose or wobble a bit).

Check the back of the boards, that one may feel secure at the top from the front but needs to be screwed down.

Same for the gate then paint everything.

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @AlanM52. Just to add to the suggestions made, I recommend replacing the rotting post with at least an H3 treated framing timber. Please make sure that the post does not touch the ground as it is not rated for long term soil contact. Another option is to use H4, but it depends on the availability at your store. My best advice is to measure the panels that are completely compromised and replacing them with new Merbau decking panels.

Thanks for your responses. really appreciate it! For the post which needs to be replaced, the wood will very likely be in contact with the ground (maybe not soil but definitely leaves etc.) just due to the design of the fence. I'll see if our local store has H4 framing timber for this.
