Best option for driveway?

Hello, what materials would be best to stop the Mud from sinking in the driveway?

Re: Best option for unsealed driveway?

Hi @Ross-,

Hope all is well.

How long is the driveway?

Do you have a budget in mind for this project?

Re: Best option for unsealed driveway?

Hi Jason,

It's about 8 metres long. Trying to fix the right side. Thinking maybe to concrete just the side sinking?

Re: Best option for unsealed driveway?

Hello @Ross-

Since this is a driveway, I suggest engaging the services of a professional driveway concrete specialist. They will be able to quote you how much the service will cost. Normally for standard concrete base building it would not be an issue, but because a vehicle has to drive over it will need to be a certain thickness so that it can carry the weight of a vehicle.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks @Ross-,

As above, did you have a budget in mind? I wondered whether you were wanting to explore cheaper alternatives to a professional concreter.

Hi Jason, yes want a cheaper short term option, maybe blue metal?

Re: Best option for unsealed driveway?

Hi @Ross-,

It looks like your driveway is on reactive clay soil, which is probably why the surface is sinking under the weight of your car. For a better short-term fix, I’d suggest first adding a few layers of geotextile fabric over the clay to separate it from the layers above. Then, add a layer of road base or drainage gravel and compact it thoroughly using a mechanical compactor (which can be hired).

After compacting, top up any sunken areas and compact again. You might also consider spreading a layer of sand on top to help lock the aggregate in place as it works into the gaps. Proper compaction is really the key to ensuring the surface can handle vehicle weight. Simply adding blue metal or gravel without compacting may give a quick fix, but the sinking problem is likely to return in a few months.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
