What does a retired RAAF fitter do for his new home.. Adds a timber roof and privacy screens to the inner courtyard and garden…

Steps

Step 1

design and planning project.. 88x88 design pine used as joists, mounted under the eaves and attached to the bottom cord of roof trusses.

Step 2

Design pine used again bearers and rafters

Step 3

18 x 88 do used as battens, screwed from underneath, so no requirement to get up on the roof, safety ,, screw heads now became a design feature. Off set spaces in roof were purely decorative..

Step 4

Screens used vertical and horizontal posts 88 x 88 spine posts..

Step 5

Circular feature in the screen we used 18 x 88 design pine battens. Circular feature was deliberately off set to one side.. Sunray pattern was set out using simple geometry with screw heads exposed for visual effect.

Step 6

Circle was fabricated from design pine, layers for strength. Core 10 steel silhouette of Aussie scene, main core of the whole garden. Proudly Australian.. added to circle..

Step 7

Ends of all beams were shaped into 4 sided pyramids, overall visual effect..

Step 8

Side roof and screen set were marking out the carport. Straight beams again with feature holes in roof. Battens on the side included 3 etched glass panels, rescued from garage sale , from demolished state bank, Ballarat, approx 140 yrs old..

Step 9

let’s paint.!!! All timer work painted white. “ white paint may not always be right, but is never wrong” great colour to use.

Step 10

Courtyards are finished.. all extra plants added. Sit back and enjoy when summer arrives . Panel behind the staghorn now enhances the central panel.. thanks Bunnings..

You've done a fantastic job with your new courtyard roof and screening project.

I'm extremely impressed by the circular screen element of the build. You can clearly see that a lot of time and effort were put into getting things perfect. How did you go about making the circular cutout? Did you use a sheet product and cut out the circle with a jigsaw? Or did you use another technique?

I love that you say the screen uses simple geometry, but I know just how much effort went into getting the correct angles for the cuts on the screening.

You have absolutely nailed this project. The craftsmanship, time, effort and love that went into this project really show.

Hi Jacob,

To make the ring for the privacy screen -

On a piece of scrap MDF, scribe 2 concentric circles of 62cm and 70cm diameter.
Divide the circles into 6 equal segments.
Make a template from the 2 Concentric arcs on one of the segments.
Place the template on a piece of 18 x 138 design pine and cut out 12 pieces
Place one set of 6 segments on a bench to form a circle
Place another set of six segments on top of the first circle and ensure the joints line up with the adjacent circle. Glue with exterior glue and nail
When glue has set, putty nail holes, trim, sand and paint
To make the circle this way ensures you don’t have any short grain and is quite strong

Good afternoon @robann

Bring on the shade and peacefulness! Really like the idea and how you have gone about deigning the roof. Right down to your temporary bridge while you installed the battens 🙂 I cant tell you which i like better, the gaps in the battens on the ceiling or the circle design with the diagonal slats. They work well with each other.

Grabbing and then managing to reuse those old bank engraving panels 🙂 Thats the icing on the cake!

Hi Dave,

The whole project took approx 2 weeks. We weren’t actually timing it.. my wife and I get so much enjoyment with our projects that we just get engrossed in what we are doing and enjoying the journey. Isn’t that what retirement is all about..
