Do I need a weedmat or geotextile below artificial grass?

Hi,

I am referring to https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrd64pDKVuk to lay artificial grass in my backyard. The video does not tell about geotextile to prevent weeds from growing particularly at the joints. Should I consider laying it before the artificial grass is laid?

Re: Do I need a weedmat or geotextile below artificial grass

Hi @sujoy_kb,

From what I’ve seen, weed mat or geotextile isn’t generally used or required under artificial grass. It’s not something we include in our how-to guides, and it’s also not typically recommended by the manufacturers of artificial turf systems. The prepared base layer and the artificial grass itself form a fairly solid barrier, which is usually more effective than weed matting on its own.

At the joins, the grass sections overlap, are glued or taped, and then pinned down, so there’s very little opportunity for weeds to grow through those areas. As long as the base is properly prepared and compacted, weed issues are uncommon.

That said, there’s nothing inherently wrong with adding a weed mat if it gives you extra peace of mind. It just isn’t considered necessary, and in many cases, the artificial grass performs better without it. Proper base preparation is far more important than adding an extra layer underneath.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
