Faulty Swap n Go gas bottles?

I purchased a 8.5ltr sawp n go bottle but despite being full no gas came out when i turned the tap on. I swapped it over at the Tingalpa store for a new one and the same thing has happened. IS this an issue with a specific batch, or am i missing something? I have checked the fill valve and everything is in order.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Crowa68. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about gas bottles.

It's unlikely that there is an issue with multiple bottles, though that's always a possibility. How familiar are you with the, I presume, BBQ? Multiple times in the past I've seen a similar issue where a safety gas valve is installed on the hose. These often include a dial that shows how much gas remains in the bottle. Typically, once the gas valve has been opened on the bottle, the dial of the safety valve needs to be pressed down to allow the gas to flow through it.

Could you please hook the bottle up to your hose and take a picture of the setup for me? Let me know if you need a hand uploading images. Once I've got a clearer Idea of the setup, I can then make enquiries with the gas bottle supplier for troubleshooting.

Appreciate your reply Mitchell, but it is the same BBQ and same swap n go bottles for years. On the day i purchased 2 bottles of which only one is faulty and now a second. The other bottle is working fine .

That's quite unusual, @Crowa68, and I still suspect that something unusual is going on. We'd be happy to swap the bottle over again, but it's far more likely a hose or BBQ issue. Obviously, if the other bottle works, that eliminates your BBQ being the issue. Perhaps it's an incompatibility issue with the bottle and your hose. Between the bottle that doesn't work and the one that does, is there any difference in the outlets on the bottle? Also, are you using the older style external thread hose or the newer internal thread?

Are you sure they are full bottles, and you weren't perhaps given empty ones by accident?

Ultimately, swapping the bottle over once again is likely the only option we have, but it would be nice to identify if there is some other issue going on.

Shame i had to do the research for you Mitchell, may help to tell staff at all locations. I was working on green top taps the new ones are black. Reason why below...

Swap n Go changed the color of their gas cylinder taps from green to black to implement a new valve that is safer and easier to use. The new valve is called the Leisure Cylinder Connection 27 (LCC27).

Why the change?

Safety
The LCC27 valve has a back check valve that prevents gas from flowing when the cylinder isn't connected to an appliance. This reduces the risk of accidental gas leaks and BBQ fires.

The older green top taps let gas out even if not connected. Its an old school habit to blow the plug out of the bottle by turning the tap.

I'm so sorry @Crowa68. I didn't realise you were opening the valve without the bottle attached to your BBQ. I presumed you had attached it, but it wasn't working.

Yes, you're 100% correct. The newer style valve prevents gas from being expelled from a bottle when it's not connected to an appliance for safety reasons.
