Front garden tropical makeover

We moved into our home in 2022 and the front garden was just brick city! So totally revamped it by getting rid of all traces of the brick and planting a tropical oasis from which to view the pelicans that fly over!

Materials

Salt and pepper gravel

your paving slabs of two different sizes

the Corten garden edging that you stock

White river pebbles

the Holman black planters

mortar grey for mortaring the slabs down

Tools

Shovels

spades

trowels

buckets

Steps

Step 1

1. Remove all plants that were not part of the scheme we had envisaged.

Step 2

2. Start planting up with plants that were in the theme of the following:

Rewild

waterwise

western Australian native plants

tropical, cactus and succulents

Step 3

More plants were planted as well as the front wall painted aubergine

Step 4

Cactus and climbers were added

Step 5

The brick footpath was prepped for stepping stones

Step 6

Stepping stones laid out

Step 7

then

Stepping stones installed

Step 8

Then gravel and more pavers laid to hide more brick

Step 9

Then smoothed out the gravel

Step 10

Then the final step was to tidy up and make it a great place to sit and watch the pelicans fly over and watch the birds and bees enjoy all the flowers on the agave, grevillea and banksias!

You've done a great job transforming a brick-heavy front yard into a much more inviting and natural space. The mix of tropical and native plants works well, and the use of gravel, pavers, and edging adds structure without feeling too rigid. Painting the front wall and adding planters adds a nice visual touch, and it’s great that you’ve created a relaxing spot to enjoy the local wildlife. A thoughtful and well-balanced project.
