How can I build a solar powered swing gate?

Hi, I would like to build a basic electric swing gate that is fully solar powered. I would really appreciate any tips on the best way to do this. Thanks heaps!

Re: How can I build a solar powered swing gate?

Hello @choppy1

Thanks for sharing your question about installing a solar powered swing gate.

Installing a solar-powered electric swing gate is very achievable, but there are a few key considerations that will help you avoid headaches down the track.

Choosing the Right Gate Opener

Not all gate motors are suited to solar setups. Look for a swing gate opener kit that specifically mentions solar compatibility or comes with a solar panel kit. These usually include low-voltage DC motors designed for efficient power use. It is also worth checking that the control box has battery backup included, since solar setups need a deep-cycle battery to store energy for night or cloudy days. A good example of a solar swing arm is the Richmond Solar Single Arm Swing Gate Kit.

Solar and Power Planning

The solar panel should be positioned where it will receive uninterrupted sunlight for most of the day. Avoid shaded spots near trees or buildings, as this will dramatically reduce performance. In many cases, a single 20–40W panel is sufficient, but if your gate is used heavily, you may want a larger panel or dual-panel setup. The battery should be housed in a waterproof enclosure near the gate controller, ideally close to the motor.

Installation Tips

Make sure your gate posts are solid and set deep in concrete, because an electric opener will put consistent torque and stress on them. Align the swing arms carefully incorrect geometry is the biggest cause of jamming or premature motor failure. Leave enough clearance so the arms do not bind against the gate or fence. Run the motor cabling through conduit to protect it from weather and accidental damage. When wiring, follow the manufacturer’s diagrams closely and keep connections watertight.

Things to Watch Out For

A common mistake is underestimating the weight and length of the gate. Check the opener’s rated capacity carefully and allow a margin above your gate’s actual weight. Wind loading is another factor solid panel gates act like sails in windy areas, so a heavier-duty motor or dual-ram setup may be required. Also, plan for manual release in case of flat batteries or system faults; most quality kits include this feature.

Electrical safety

In the interest of health and safety, I suggest engaging the services of a licensed electrician to wire up your solar power system so that it will be connected safely and in compliance with all electrical rules and regulations.

Thank you for this helpful response. What would you recommend I build the gate posts out of to ensure they can handle the single swing gate?

Re: How can I build a solar powered swing gate?

Hi @choppy1,

I'd suggest a 3-metre-long 100x100 hardwood post like this 100 x 100mm Fence Post Hardwood CCA 3.0m.

The general rule with posts like this is that one-third of the overall height of the post should be beneath the ground in concrete.

If using the 3m post, you'll need to ensure at least 1 metre of the post is set below ground, encased in a 300 mm diameter concrete footing.

If the post needs to be taller, say 2.4 metres out of the ground, you would need to use a 3.6m post with 1.2m underground encased in concrete.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
