Hey everyone,
Hope you’re all having a brilliant weekend so far.
I’ve just moved into a brand new rental, and have got approval from the landlord to install (and remove also at my own cost when vacating) a pet door either in the glass or screen door for my 5kg cavoodle.
Could I please request some advice on what the cheapest way to install this would be? My friend who’s fairly handy with stuff like this says the mesh on the screen is probably too flimsy to support the weight of a pet door, but I’m concerned that installing one in the glass and then having to replace the entire glass panel when vacating is going to be insanely expensive.
I do have a standalone pet door that I’ve used in the past already, but would rather use an installed one unless it’s going to cost $1k+.
Have attached some pics - any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thank you
Hi @BlairM,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Your friend would be correct that, unfortunately, all of the pet doors in our range rely on there being rigid aluminium screening like on a security door. With just a fly screen, it would not be strong enough to hold the pet door in place.
There is a good chance that having a glazier remove the glass and replace it with a panel that can accept a dog door, then returning it to its original state down the line, would cost over $1k.
It sounds like you may already have something similar, but a Hakuna Pets Medium Black Mesh Patio Pet Door is likely your best option. If the glass door is left open, your cavoodle would have free access without major changes to the door frame.
Let me know what you think.
Jacob
