How to add a shade attachment to Mimosa Pergola 3m x 3m?

Hi, we have just purchased and installed the Mimosa 3m x 3m pergola. Required specifically for shade around a small pool we have in our back garden. However, the issue we now face is that due to the height of the pergola, once the afternoon sun (around 4.00pm) hits the pergola, no more shade. Is there any form of attachment we can instal such as shade cloth or even side louvres to increase the amount of shade. Something we can roll up and down as I am aware that we must leave the top open and potentially the sides if anything is installed.

Depending on the specific model of pergola and the space requirements, you might be able to mount a Coolaroo 3x2.4m Graphite Crank Operated Outdoor Blind to the pergola.

If the 3m width of this blind does not fit between the posts, you should be able to use this Coolaroo 2.4 x 2.4m Graphite Crank Operated Outdoor Blind with some slight gaps on the sides.

Great idea on adding extra shade to your pergola. However, I’d recommend consulting a structural engineer before making any modifications. Altering the pergola to add attachments like blinds or louvres could affect its stability and wind load compliance. An engineer can ensure the changes are safe and structurally sound, especially for your area’s specific conditions.

Thanks for the advice. I am aware of the issues regarding structural integrity, hence the reason I am only looking to attach shade cloth solely for the purpose of reducing sun exposure. All options so far have been major adjustments and quite expensive. If in any way I feel that what I do would jeopardise the structures integrity (and the way things are starting to pan out may be nothing) I would seek further advice. Thanks again.

Hi Jacob, thanks for that. I have looked at the Coolaroo Blind. The 3 metre option is the only easy I would go. The issue I now have with looking into the blind that is in the Bunnings range is that where I am to instal it, the actual posts are 3 metres apart. Ie: from outside of post to outside of the other post. On closer inspection of the product you have it states that the actual length of the blind is 3070mm. An issue brought up by someone else. Can the blind be cut to suit the posts in any way?

Hi @parkoh,

As my colleague has pointed out adding a blind would alter the structure and you'd need to speak with an engineer about suitable attachment methods.

Given the issues with having an engineer advise on suitability and attachment methods, you might like to consider creating a free-standing frame. This way, the blind could sit just behind the gazebo and would block the whole opening without needing to modify it or use a smaller size.
