How to add a stair on a down slope driveway?

Hi. Is there any "Stair attachment" on a down slope concrete driveway?

The driveway is a little slippery when it's wet, I want to add a small stair on the left side.

I will also add balustrade on the posts

Re: Add a stair on a down slope driveway

Hi @lukelee,

There are quite a few rules and regulations around step construction, and it’s worth being aware of them before starting. Stairs need to have a minimum and maximum rise (height of each step) and tread depth (the part you step on), as well as a minimum width to be considered safe and compliant. Were you able to sacrifice some of the driveway space itself for the stairs, or is it already tight for a car?

If you can’t afford to take up part of the driveway, there simply wouldn’t be enough room on the kerbed edge to create a safe, usable set of stairs. To meet the regulations, the stairs would need to encroach onto the driveway itself so they’re wide enough to walk on and have proper treads and risers.

It’s also quite difficult to attach any sort of “bolt-on” stair to an existing sloped driveway surface. Prefabricated attachments generally aren’t suitable because the slope makes it impossible to achieve even, level steps. Typically, the only way to do this properly is to form and pour new concrete stairs along the side of the driveway, cutting into or building up alongside the slope to get a consistent rise and tread.

I’d recommend speaking with a concreter or builder who can assess the site and design stairs that comply with Australian Standards.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Thanks. I guess I will ask a driveway builder.
