How to add crazy paving over existing pavers?

Looking for ideas on how I could freshen up these pavers.

Ideally i'd like to be able to crazy pave the area, does anyone know if crazy paving over the top of these pavers would work alright? Approx 30 m2 under the pergola. The area is level and there is a concrete pad underneath but too pavers many to rip them up, so would only consider options that go above.

Possibly a coat with a sealer (easiest)? Build a deck (hardest)?

Thanks!

Re: Freshen up pavers - Crazy paving?

Hello @tjwg

If there is sand under the pavers there will be a possibility of movement which will transfer over to the pavers above and cause the grout to split open. Water enters the crack and passes through the two layers of pavers and onto the sand foundation loosening it even more which then causes more movement. I understand that you don't wish to remove the pavers, but from an installation point of view the pavers must be removed in order to have a sound foundation.

Painting the pavers however is an excellent option. In regards to what paint to use, I suggest having a look at the White Knight 1L White Ultra Pave Quick Dry Paint. It does both concrete and paving.

In regards to building a deck I suggest having a look at this discussion - Low-level composite deck over concrete and soil by @oninpena

I also suggest having a look at these discussions - Paver refresh with paint by @prettyliving and Painted outdoor pavers by @Marj2Homer

Hi @tjwg,

The paving looks good and well laid so my choice would be painting and for the $$$ outlay leaves you in a good position for change of mind later on to do something else like decking.

Afternoon @tjwg

How about an outside the box thought....

Pressure wash the area first and then remove the second last row of pavers and either fill the whole width of the paver with weed mat and then white pebbles. Or Cut the paver in half so that the channels are thinner. You could also do it for the row next to the house, so half paver, rocks then pavers. It would mark out the area in a different way.

As an added "up - glow" run a LED snack row of lights in the rocky channel Lytworx 8m Multicolour LED Solar Rope Light I like the idea of white LED's but colourful could work as well.
