How to add window canopy to Colorbond home?

Can you attach a window/door canopy onto a colour bond home and what precautions/tips need to be taken? Thanks

Re: window canopy

Hi @krogk,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Yes, you should be able to attach a window or door canopy to your home as long as it is screwed into the framing behind the Colorbond. This is because the Colorbond cladding is not structural and is not designed to resist the forces generated by wind getting up under the canopy.

If you have a look at the location where you are considering installing the canopy, then you should be able to see screws which should indicate the location of the framing.

If you could upload some photos, I would be happy to point out the likely location of the framing. Let me know if you need any help uploading images.

Once the framing has been identified, you would simply screw the canopy in place following the canopy manufacturer's instructions.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob

Re: window canopy

Thanks Jacob for getting back to me so quickly.
I am uploading the images. We are looking at putting canopies over 3 lots of doors, primarily to protect them from water damage. Not great photos as I am not at the property at present but hopefully you can see what we are trying to do

Re: window canopy

Hi @krogk,

Thank you for the photos.

Yeah, you shouldn't have any trouble finding some framing to screw into. With openings of that size, there's a good chance there is a timber header that runs the full length over the top of the doors that could be screwed into. See below for the likely location.

You should be able to confirm the location of a header or the framework with a studfinder.

Outside of this, it would just be a case of following the canopy manufacturer's recommendations for install.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
