Re: How to apply oil on new deck?

Hi @L3mon1980,

We would be happy to help. Can you please explain what the issue is you are facing? It might also be helpful for our members to know when the deck was installed and a little more detail about the process you followed when oiling.

Thanks,

Jason

Re: How to apply oil on new deck?

So before installation i received a data sheet with intergrain universal timber oil stating that the manufacturer would recommend the product after installation. When finished i gave the deck a wipe down with damp cloth as directed, then applied 1 coat of the oil and between 30-60 i removed access oil from board with cloth then 24hours later reapplied.and as you can see half the deck looks dry while the other looks not so dry

Re: How to apply oil on new deck?

Hi @L3mon1980,

It looks pretty clear to me that the far end of the deck has absorbed the oil far better than the closer end, which makes me think the two ends of the decking timber have been subject to different conditions. To have the most consistent absorption of decking oils, the timber needs to be as uniform as possible, which is done by weathering the timber and sanding where needed.

Did you weather the timber before installing it? Is that end of the deck exposed to the sun and rain more than the end closer to the camera? Was the timber in place for long before you oiled it?

Do you have any more photos of your deck from outside the glass windows? Does it look like that at all times of the day, or is it worse when it is cold or in the mornings?

Is there anything at that line that is an obvious difference between the two sides of the deck? Is there a concrete slab under part of the deck and natural ground under the other half?

It looks like a fairly consistent line that makes me suspect the issue might be related to what is under the deck, or perhaps the weather that the end of the deck has experienced.

It could be that the far end, being more exposed to the weather, has leached more of the natural oils in the timber, meaning it has absorbed the Intergrain Universal Timber Oil more consistently.

Unfortunately, if this is the case, then you are likely going to need to use Cabot's New Timber Prep as well as Cabot's Deck Clean to remove the oil and return the timber to bare before reapplying your oil.

Let me know what you think, and please don't hesitate to ask any further questions or concerns.

Jacob
