Advice needed please 🙏
We have nearly finished laying the decking boards.
We need to add short posts that the handrail will sit on, but how is the timber handrail attached to the longer posts that support the roof sheets?
Hello @wattosark
You’re making great progress on the decking—well done! When it comes to attaching a timber handrail to the longer posts that support the roof sheets, it’s typically done by first installing a balustrade or a series of evenly spaced vertical uprights. The handrail is then fixed securely to the top of this balustrade. The ends of the handrail are usually screwed directly into the side of the vertical roof posts using galvanised or stainless-steel screws, like the Buildex 14g x 100mm Galvanised Batten Screws for example, which are strong and weather resistant.
It’s important to use proper brackets for added strength and stability, especially if the handrail will be load-bearing. Products like the Zenith Handrail Bracket – Stainless Steel are suitable and designed for outdoor use. Just pre-drill your holes to avoid splitting the timber and ensure everything sits flush.
That said, before finalising the installation, do check with your local council regarding the regulations for balustrade height, handrail height, and spacing between uprights—there are safety standards in place, especially if your deck is over a certain height off the ground. The general rule is no more than a 125mm gap between balustrades, but exact requirements can vary by location. A quick call or visit to your local council’s website can help avoid having to redo anything later.
Once it’s all attached and secure, consider giving it a protective coat using Cabot’s Aquadeck or Feast Watson Outdoor Furniture Oil, both available at Bunnings, to match the rest of your decking and protect the timber from weathering.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks Eric.
We plan to use wire balustrade system.
We are checking the local council requirements.
Could you possibly send a link to the type of and suitable Zenith handrail bracket you mentioned?
Also we need to build two sets of stairs. Most probably 3 steps in height.
We like the look of boxed stairs. Do you have a link on how to build them?
Hi @wattosark,
As well as screwing the timber handrail into the posts, you can use small Zenith angle brackets for attachment.
I haven't come across any guides on building boxed stairs. However, you might like to consider using the Peak Products Black 3 Tread Steel Stair Stringers and treated pine treads.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Is this timber available to order?
The Special Orders team at your local store should be able to order it in for you @wattosark.
Mitchell
Thanks. I will ring and check.
