How to attach framed rope light motif to Colorbond roof?

Hi all.

I've ordered a big rope-light display (approx 5m x 0.8), which has a steel frame, to mount on my roof for Xmas.

I'd rather not be drilling or doing anything to damage the roof and was wondering what was a good way to keep it up there.

I've looked at neodymium magnetic pipe clamps, but they seem very expensive. Any suggestions welcome.

Just thinking out loud here.

Plan A

I might buy some shelfing angle brackets the ones with out a brace and re bend the right angle to suit your roof angle to vertical.

I might either hot glue the angle to your roof or use some clear silicone as both will pull back off and not hurt your roof but some residue might be left behind as a heads up.

As for display lights just cable tie it to angles.

Plan B

I used this method to attch shade cloth to it and a timber length it in roof gutter as a tempary measure to span to my fence 2 metres away.

If you had a length of timber running up the rigde line of your roof and were to attach clothes line rope (inexpensive) to it and now that clothes line rope can come over to ridge line cap and drop to another timber on which the display was mounted. The display would be held in place by gravity as the weight of the disply wont pull the ridge line timber over the hump. Super high winds forecast may need to take it off roof but whos to say any decorations will survive higher winds.

Hope this gives some food for thought as alternatives to magnets.

Thank you for your question about attaching a Christmas light frame to your roof.

@Jewelleryrescue's ideas are good options to consider.

Since you didn't want to use screws that could damage the roof, my first thought was to utilise the screws that are already there. You could take out a couple of roofing screws and install a Kinetic 20mm Copper Pipe Half Saddle Clips with the same screw and the same hole. If you did this in 2-3 locations along the frame, it would keep it in place.

Once it comes time to take the Christmas lights down, just remove the saddle clips and reinstate the roofing screw.

It's not perfect but it's worth considering.

Again I think @Jewelleryrescue has some good options to consider. Mine is on the same lines as with @JacobZ in removing the existing roofing screws and using the half saddle clips which are also available in 15mm.

My only change to this would be to not re-use the roofing screws, once you take the decoration down. Instead use new ones with fresh rubber seals just as reassurance of a water-tight seal. If you can't match the same colour hex head, just buy the cheapest pack and swap the rubbers out.

The eternal question on how to secure Christmas decorations to the roof 🙂

I think there is another question in here about securing Decorations to the roof (last year) but cant remember it clearly.

I keep coming back to sandbags as weights to hold it down so it dosnt leave unexpectedly. The bags will be attached to their counterparts on the other side of the ridge via rope tied around the necks of the sandbags.

The reindeers and Santa may need some triangle supports to hold the whole thing vertically (not sure if it will come with brackets) You could make two or three simple triangles that match you roof angle and the other side is vertical. So think this -

The support has a long side (this sits on the roof).

From the lower end of this there is a vertical piece that the santa is screwed to,

The last piece of the triangle can be from the top of that vertical piece to midway of the foot on the roof.

The foot of the triangle has the sandbags drapped over it, then rope over the ridge to bags that are tied together. I would have 3 lots for the legs as well as 2 more for the frame. You dont want this to move 🙂

Hi @stevo69 and all.

I like the idea of using existing roof screws. Maybe add permament roof bracket low profile for future xmas

I am a tiny bit concerned taking out existing roof fastenings could create a roof leak as the original seal broken so I would want to add silicon or a fresh roof screw with added seal on it.

There i said it I feel better now
