How to build a 800mm brick retaining wall?

Hi,

I am wanting to build a rendered retaining wall in the front yard - using brick. We will be building it 800mm high, with approx 4 brick thickness. I understand a footing is required, just wanting to know how deep the footing should be, and if 300mm is sufficient enough? what reinforcement steel should be used ie do we apply mesh brick sheets at every 3 bricks in height, and rebar? What type of rebar is reccomended? And if there is anything else we should keep in mind or need in particular?

We are also going to attempt to come up either side of the stairway and make planter boxes - I understand we need to seal the bricks with waterproofer. Is there anything else?

I think your heading in the right direction.

Your footing will be great at 300 x 300 Use trench mesh inside the 300mm footing no need to cut it just over lap it. You wont need reo bar as the trench mesh is reo bar welded together Set the mesh into the middle of the 300mm high footing.

Keep the footing flat then if you want planter boxes besides the path dig into the hill to keep footings flat off the main front wall footings near the path.

So make all the footings at once will help you later. AS footings all at the same level laying bricks is easy.

No need to seal bricks unless you like then with a wet look. It is good for water to drain out of the bricks You really should put in an Ag drain pipe behind to wall with gravel .

Beaware some councils want engineering diagrams for retaining walls with earth over 600mm . But if infill is less than 600 mm call it a fence.

Steel not need in regular or besser type bricks. above the footing.
