How to build a secure front patio?

I’m a Mum of one 3 and my youngest is 17 months. He’s walking now and his favourite place to escape to is outdoors. My front yard isn’t so child friendly but I have a cosy small patio area with huge potential to become safe and secure and large enough for my little one to enjoy outside play. I would love to build a gated environment around the small patio area that looks beautiful and feels super nice inside. Also if it’s possible to make a roof over top even if it’s that mesh stuff ☺️

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

For fencing I'd suggest checking out the range from ProtectorAl. They have a variety of fencing options that would be perfect for creating an enclosed area for your little ones to roam free while still being protected.

You could include some Swing Slide Climb 1 x 1m Grey Rubber Play Pavers around the patio to help protect against skinned knees and bruised hands.

Child friendly planter boxes and plants such as this Multi-coloured Kids Garden Planter with some fun plants like strawberries could be a wonderful shared experience and way of learning together.

For shade, you can check out the range of shade sails, shade cloth and shade cloth accessories.

Welcome to Bunnings Workshop, it's great to have you here and thanks for your question.

Personally I think @JacobZ is right onto it, with the ProtectorAI range, there are quite a few options there.

If it were my house, I would probably work out from the left hand side of your first picture, to build a fence off the front wall (not where the meter-boxes and stuff is) and you may need to build a small cement plinth, in place of the pavers, as you can't really put masonry bolts or Dynabolts into pavers to hold up any sort of a fence.

From there I would work to the first steel support for your carport (the blue one) and then head back toward the other blue steel support next to the house, these could be cut and bolted in place as they sit, the biggest thing is for a really good fence, it needs to be fixed well to the ground.

You could put a gate in anywhere along either of these spans, if you want real security against children getting out (that sounds terrible), use a pool fence type gate latch that only allows people taller than 1.5 metres tall to operate it.

With this advice a vision is definitely forming now 🥰🥹 aw thank you so much, I can plan accordingly now with confidence I know what I’m doing. Yes building off the wall and adding cement is such a great way for doing this. Thank you many thanks

Welcome to the community 🙂 Its a nice place to wander through and hve a look at what people have done in similar instances 🙂

I agree that @JacobZ's suggestion of the style of fence is secure and better yet just found they have a aluminium picket fence lookalike! white picket fence , tho my prefereance is a timber white picket styled fence.

Same principals of what has been mention but you install the posts, then rails and finaly the style of pickets you like.

100 x 100mm 2.4m H4 Treated Pine Post Id suggest the post hole be 500mm deep. 600mm better (Rem the post dosnt have to be to the top of the fence, just the top of teh rail.)

Bastion 20kg Quik Set Concrete For the fence posts

70 x 45mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine 6.0m (best value for the size)

Pickets timber Depending on what style and height you want.
