How to build a timber deck frame?

Hello

I'm planning to build a timber deck frame under my free-standing pergola but i have a question on what size Joist and bearers are recommended for a 5x4 frame - 90x45 or 120x45mm?

Thanks

Re: Timber Deck frame

Hello @mike1w

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about building a deck.

I suggest having a look at these guides - How to build a low-level deck by @Adam_W and How to build a deck by @MitchellMc. These guides will give you a general idea of how to plan a decking frame and what you need to take into consideration. I also suggest having a look at this featured project - Low-level composite deck over concrete and soil by @oninpena. It's an excellent example of a single level deck that is supported by angle brackets and pedestal feet.

In regards to the joist and bearers, depending on the space available you can use either 90x45 or 120x45. Your decking frame choice, the space available and the ground you are installing it on will determine what materials you can use for your deck.

I also recommend having a look at Bunnings deck building guide:
