How to build an outdoor kitchen?

Hi Team,

I am referring to the DIY advise for outdoor kitchen https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/outdoor-living/outdoor-design/how-to-create-an-outdoor-kitche... - Option 2. Is there anyway I can get a detailed steps on how to do it.

My major concerns are below

  • Is the decking merbau timber fire safe, as based on the BBQ installation direction the BBQ should not be in contact with any flamable objects.
  • Can I use MDF to create carcas for the kitchen benchtop.

Re: Starter size outdoor kitchen- detailed steps

Installing a BBQ over merbau decking is normal when you put it on top of cabinets designed for the heat, that caution is more about making sure that you don't put it right on top of something flammable with no gap.
Regarding MDF outdoors, I wouldn't recommend it. it's not designed to withstand exposure to moisture and weather conditions, which can cause it to swell, warp or deteriorate quickly. I personally would make use of the AlfrescoPlus Outdoor Kitchens - Bunnings Australia range for your outdoor BBQ if it's a free standing you can still build the cabinets around it.

Re: Starter size outdoor kitchen- detailed steps

Hi @fcjoseph,

If you can let us know any questions you have, we can provide advice on creating your own outdoor kitchen.

As @BennettT mentioned, that's about placing the BBQ directly on a combustible material, such as would be the case with a built-in BBQ. The cabinet or trolley is in contact with the decking, not the actual BBQ itself. If your instructions suggest it can't be placed in a cabinet on a timber deck, I'd be happy to take a detailed look at them. Please let me know the BBQ you wish to use.

They are also spot on that MDF is not suitable for external use. Even if it is painted, water will find and access a route, and it will begin to decompose immediately if moisture reaches the board.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
