How to build drawers for a ute?

Good morning Guys!

I'm decided to create a grand drawer system in the back of my ute, the question I have is,

Regular Plywood, What steps should I take to paint it? I've thought about using Marine plywood for its weather durability, but the weight will be a big consideration..

What products do you suggest I should use to both Prime and paint these drawers? I do eventually plan to line the exposed areas with Marine carpet too..

Haven't started yet. But will be planning to smash it out during Easter!

Is the back of the ute enclosed, or will the drawer system be exposed to the elements? That makes a big difference in what materials and coatings you'll need. Even if you're planning to paint standard plywood, keep in mind that water will still find its way in through screw holes and joins if it's not fully sealed. Regular plywood, even when painted, will usually only last a few months outdoors before decay sets in.

If you're keen on using plywood, marine-grade or H3-treated plywood would be your best bet. Marine ply is more resistant to moisture, but it's actually designed to be used with a fibreglass coating for full waterproofing. Without that, it can still deteriorate over time if water gets into the layers. H3-treated ply is another solid option, as it's specifically treated to resist decay in outdoor environments.

If you do go ahead with standard ply, make sure to coat all sides—edges included—with a quality exterior timber primer. Dulux Precision Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer would be a good choice. After priming, you could apply a durable exterior enamel paint or Dulux Weathershield to help seal it up before carpeting.

I've got a stock standerd Arb Canopy that sits above the tub. So the only time It may get a little water, would be once I open the tailgate.

When cutting marine carpet, are there any guides you have for gluing and fit-off?

But otherwise. I thank you for your time and I'll do a little more research!

All good then @CoopersDIY, I'd just use the standard plywood and paint it.

I haven't seen any guides for installing marine carpet, but it's not hard. Just cut it to size carefully with a retractable knife, wearing cut-resistant gloves. Apply contact adhesive to both the timber and the back of the carpet. Wait the prescribed amount of time on the instructions, then bring the two surfaces together, ensuring you remove any air bubbles and smooth the carpet out.
