How to calculate mortar needed?

Hi, please could you tell me how much mortar I would need for 17m2 of brick work using the bricks in the attached photo? An online calculator told me I'd need approx 368 bricks in wastage.

Many thanks!

Re: mortar calculator

Hello @DIYH

To work out how much mortar you need for 17 square metres of brickwork using the Brighton Masonry 305 x 90 x 162 mm bricks, here's a simple step-by-step explanation:

First, these larger bricks usually require about 39 bricks per square metre, so for 17 square metres, you’ll need around 663 bricks in total. Next, mortar use is measured by how much is needed per 100 bricks. On average, 100 bricks need about 0.015 cubic metres of mortar. So, for 663 bricks, you’ll need about 0.1 cubic metres of mortar. To be safe and account for any wastage or spillage, it’s best to round this up slightly to 0.12 cubic metres.

Now, a 20 kg bag of pre-mixed mortar usually gives you around 0.012 cubic metres when mixed. To find out how many bags you’ll need, divide the total mortar needed by how much one bag gives: 0.12 ÷ 0.012 = 10 bags.

So, you will need around 10 bags of 20 kg mortar to do the job. To be extra safe, it’s smart to grab 1 or 2 more just in case.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
