How to clean paint off deck?

Hey team,

What's the best way to remove paint from decking boards without damaging the deck stain? It was Feast Watson Black Japan and the paint was British Paints Exterior low sheen, water based.

Re: How to clean paint off deck?

Hi @KHGS,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Begin with the mildest option possible, warm soapy water and a soft brush or cloth. This can often lift fresh or lightly bonded water-based paint, especially if it hasn’t fully cured. Gently scrub in a circular motion, rinse, and blot dry. This method is safe and won’t damage the underlying stain, making it an ideal first step.

If soapy water isn’t enough, the next option is to use methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol, both of which are effective at softening water-based paints. Apply a small amount to a cloth and gently rub the painted area. It’s crucial to do a spot test first on an inconspicuous part of the deck to ensure it doesn’t react adversely with the stain. When used cautiously, these solvents are less likely to affect a penetrating stain compared to harsher chemical strippers.

For thicker paint or stubborn patches, a plastic scraper can help lift paint flakes without damaging the timber. Avoid using metal tools, as they can gouge the surface or remove the stain along with the paint.

For more stubborn paint, a heat gun on a low setting can be used to soften the paint. Carefully warm the area, keeping the heat gun moving, and then gently scrape. However, use this only when necessary, as excessive heat can harm the finish or timber. Also, remember to wear gloves as heat guns can be surprisingly hot and they can burn you.

If any paint is still too stubborn, consider lightly sanding with Flexovit 115mm x 1m 120 Grit Painted Surface Sandpaper Roll.

Once you’ve removed the paint, clean the area thoroughly with water and allow it to dry. If any areas appear dulled or the stain was slightly disturbed, you can apply a small amount of Feast Watson Black Japan with a soft cloth to touch up and blend the finish.

In all cases, patience and gentle methods are your best bet.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
