How to clean varnish off door frame?

Thanks for sharing your question about cleaning varnish off your door frame. 

What a nicely painted doorstep. I suggest getting a clean rag and using Diggers 1L Mineral Turpentine - 1L. Ideally it would be best to use this while the varnish is till soft, but if it has already cured and hardened, I'm afraid you'll need to sand down the painted sections and patch paint the door frame.

I recommend masking the timber step before you paint the door frame.

I learnt my lesson by not masking when I painted it. I will get onto the turpentine. It takes 7 days to cure which means I have until Sunday

Can I use the turps to get it off the concrete and bricks too?

Hi @mikamikira 

It might lessen its intensity, but I'm afraid you won't be able to remove it. The varnish has gone into the pores of the brick, and it will be impossible to get the varnish out. But given enough time it will eventually fade.

The turps didn't work. So do I have to use a sander or sand paper and will touch up paint do it? I only need a small brush/small tin

That sounds like a way to go about it, @mikamikira. I suggest you lightly sand back the door frame until the staining is removed, then touch it up with a small pot of paint. If the doorframe is plain white then one of these White Knight 100ml White Gloss Splashes Enamel Paint should do.

I have the touch up paint already, I just need to get a small paint brush.
