How to compact gravel in narrow area?

I want to replace the pebbles in my veggie garden with compacted gravel. I was planning on hiring a compactor from Bunnings however unsure how I would compact the gravel in between the garden beds as the space is only about 40cm wide. Are there any other tools I can use in this narrow space?

Re: compact gravel in narrow area

Hi @lauravdh,

I believe our small hire compactor has a plate width of 360mm, so it should fit between your beds. Best to check the model at your local store to verify the size.

Alternatively, there is only really manual compaction, which can be done with a hand tamper.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: compact gravel in narrow area

Thanks Mitchell, that’s very helpful. Once the pebbles are removed, is it as easy as adding the crushed granite and then compacting or are there any other steps or base layers I need to do?

Hi @lauravdh

My best advice is to level the gravel as best you can first and checking its flatness with a spirit level. When you are positive that it is level, you can then start tamping the surface. In regards to the base layers, you could put in a layer of sand or builders mix at the bottom depending on your preference. It's best that this layer be tamped as well before putting the gravel over it.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
