How to cover this deck?

Thinking about changing this deck to a covered space. What would be the best and cost effective solution. It gets hit by heavy winds so need something sturdy.

Re: How to cover this deck?

Hello @Kapisaaj

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about covering your deck.

I propose building a basic timber roofing frame over your deck and covering it with Suntuf Corrugated Panels. I suggest engaging the services of a builder or drafts person and asking them to draw up a roofing plan for your deck. I also suggest checking the rules and regulations of your local council in regards to building a roof over your deck.

I also recommend having a look at this discussion - Backyard covered patio with low-level deck by @tom_builds

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Good Evening @Kapisaaj

Mmmm that is a bit of a harder one to answer. Your comment "It gets hit by heavy winds so need something sturdy. " is what is making me hesitate to say yes it can be done.

As @EricL has suggested it would be wise to check in with your council but more importantly I would get a builder or architec to verify it will be strong enough. Wind lifting the sale of a roof is a bit of a concern.

In case you want to have a go  then here are a few suggestions.

- As your deck is attached to the side of your house I would strengthen the house side with a post to the ground up past the bearer and to the height of the roofline.

- Install New posts either side of the stairs to piers into the ground (concreted in)

- Install a new post in the rear back left of the deck and also against the house. (Note you may hit the foundation so the footing may need to be 400mm off the brickwork for the posts against the house.

- The last new post would be behind the air con unit, up through the deck and up the wall.

I would support each corner as you go around and replace each old post.

I would notch the top of the posts to install supporting beams between them. And I do like the corrorgated suntuf panels @EricL has suggested. (light but will do the job) I would have a slight slope on the roof and also work in a gutter to catch the rain.

Sketch up your ideas and you will soon see it take form. Once your posts are insitu then you can start working on the roof.

Re: How to cover this deck?

Hi @Kapisaaj

There are lots of possible designs, but you need one that going to provide the best weather protection. So my advice would be inline with @EricL and start with getting a draftsperson involved in the design and planning. Between you both you can discuss needs and other aspects you may not have thought of. This will be required anyway for the builder permit. But the plans will also allow you to get accurate quotes for construction.
