How to create a trellis by attaching wire rope to gal steel posts?

Hi,

I want to install a 2.4m high 4m wide trellis to support a climbing Rose.

I've got 50x50x2mm gal steel for posts and a brace across the top.

I am looking at using 3mm gal wire rope strung between the 2 posts at 200mm spacing, from about 800mm off the ground.

What's the best way to attach it?

Will these wire straps be suitable to attach with tec screws to the 2mm wall thickness? Are they best attached to the inside face or front face of the posts.

I'd like to tension it using a turnbuckle.

I'm open to other ideas.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about creating a trellis.

I suggest having a look at this featured project - Wire trellis for climbing plants by @Remarka6le. They used Taskmaster 5mm 316 Stainless Steel Wire Eye Strap - 12 Pack to run the wire down their posts to create a guide for their passion fruits. Another option would be to use Zenith 12G x 20mm Galvanised Hex Head Metal Screws hooking the wire clockwise so that the screws would pull and tension the wire. I recommend mounting it on the face of the post so that the wire will not have to be bent in a different direction when mounting to the screw.

You can use a turnbuckle for your project, but you'll need to change your wire to a Pinnacle 3.2mm x 30m Marine Grade Stainless Steel Wire Rope as stainless steel and galvanized materials don't mix well. Please note that using the Hex Head screws will tension the galvanized wire as you install it so you might not need to use the turnbuckle.
