How to fill gap between Colorbond fence and retaining wall?

Hi, we are building and the way they have cut/filled the block has left us considerably higher than our neighbour and a concrete retaining wall has been erected 400mm away from the existing colorbond fence. the depth is between 1000mm and 1500mm for most of the length of the block. I have seen other similar situations rectified by putted decking across however that was being supported by a timber fence. We can't back fill as that will eventually pop out the colorbond fence on our neighbours side. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank-you

Also, sorry I thought this retaining wall was concrete - it's timber sleepers. (we have a concrete retaining wall on the other side of the property)

Hello @Maj

Thank you very much for sharing those pictures. Now we've got a better idea of what's going on, I propose going with your proposed solution in your post. The "decking cover" can be supported by building a timber angle bracket anchored to the face of the retaining wall. The decking cover will not be that heavy and can be used as seating. However, I would not load it with anything too heavy as it might affect the retaining walls position. Its main purpose is to cover the gap and prevent anything and anyone from accidentally falling into the gap.

If you have the same situation on the other side of your property, the same solution can be applied, and the timber bracket can be drilled into the concrete face of the retaining wall.

I propose alternating sections of pot plants and seating.

Absolutely love your MS Paint 3D skills!! And you chose a very appropriate Poinsettia with Christmas upon us!!

Thank-you for your suggestions too - they're great. We may indeed break up the decking with pot plants. We'd need a post hole digger to put in timber supports, but it is certainly doable if we decide we need more support.

You have a nice solid retaining wall there 🙂 and yeah the gap is always a problem.

I am thinking of a two fold idea, along the lines of @EricL and @AlanM52 but a little different and hopefully cheaper.

Using 140 x 19mm Merbau SpecRite Pre-Oiled Decking - Random Lengths

You firstly install some vertical posts screwed to the timber sleepers themselves. If you do the math you sleeper is 50mm wide I think, then if you screw a post sized timber to it you could get another 70mm to it. The timber dosnt have to be nice as you wont see it but has to be able to survive being outside. It wont touch the ground as its only screwed to the top and second sleeper maybe.

So you have 50mm sleeper, 70mm post (or larger)

You could run a narrower board on the sleerper side and then the 140mm can be run with it overhanging teh "post" by a third if needed, I wouldnt go further than that without support.

You don't really need a post hole digger Maj as the post holes only need to be about 100mm deep - pot plant depth.

There are no lateral loads (horizontal forces acting parallel to the ground on a posts) - only vertical
