How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

IMG_9263.jpeg

 Hi there,

I am doing a low level deck from my patio, in tasmania,  there is still lot to do. I am having some questions.

a) It’s low level deck, directly from patio, Intially I was planning attach the bearer to bricks aligned directly, I saw some post which were not recommended. The level currently is just at the brick in picture. Once I lay the deck board it will be 19mm above that brick line. What I can do in the brick? Can I lay over deck board above that? If I level 19mm below the bricks, there is not much air flow as it will touch the ground level.??

b) As it is low level ground deck, do you recommend avoid moistures???

Thank you

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Hello @Ashishpra123

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your deck.

I'm afraid the decking frame is too low and there is not enough space for it to go lower as the decking panel will go over the brick lip of the house entrance. How tall is the aluminium rail of the sliding door? Is it at the same level as the decking panel? If it is, then it would just be enough for you to install the decking panel without it becoming a tripping hazard. But if the decking panel is too tall, just keep in mind that this will become a possible tripping hazard for people who are not familiar with your deck height. I can only suggest building your decking frame at least half a meter away from your house and installing 400x400 pavers in front so that the person coming out of the door will not immediately catch their foot on the edge of the deck.

Because your deck frame is very low, I suggest painting the bottom with Gripset Betta 1L Waterproofing Membrane Bitumen Rubber to protect it from moisture.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Hi Eric,

Thank you for your response. Apologies I was not able to clearly explain.

There is gap from the brick line to almunium rail is 50mm. The deck board is merbau 140mm x 19mm. Even If I can add 19mm deck board on top of this brick line. 30mm left over above to the aluminium rail for sliding door.

The deck frame is as low as 50mm from ground to 80mm at some spots.

I am going to use this water proofing paint all side double coated.

Thank you

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Hello @Ashishpra123

If you extend the decking panel to the aluminium rail it should prevent anyone from tripping on the deck as the aluminium rail is taller. It should therefore be safe to install it in this manner.

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Good Morning @Ashishpra123

Welcome to the Bunnings community pages  And am envious of you down tassie way!

I do think your low deck is a little too low, The air flow, high rainfall in Tassie and the soil colouring all lead me towards issues arising from moisture, even double coating the timber, tho helping, wont hold it back for long. The spans of your deck may allow for bounce to be felt when walking on it so a few more blocks might be an idea.

I am confused about the Aluminium rail, is it the window/door edge?

The deck top (once the floorboards are down) will that be level with the brickwork we can see against the window edge?

A photo pointing towards the window from the grass on the opposite side of the door would show the height I am after.

Hi Dave, Thank you for your response,

Definitely adding some more blocks.

With the aluminium it is sliding door. I was just was going to bring at the level of brick by adding deck board just above the brick below this sliding door.  Not sure to. Bring to height of the sliding door line???

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Hello @Ashishpra123

I think it would be ok to bring the decking panels to the height of the sliding door line but not above it. When people see the aluminium frame, they will take a step over it and their foot will immediately land on the deck. Let me tag @Dave-1 for his opinion.

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Afternoon @Ashishpra123 and @EricL

I like the idea of the decking board being at the same height as the top of the brick, so you would have aluminuium, brick and then the deck all on the same plane. Mostly because then I wont be concerned about any issues of timber over the brick, rot or dampness at that connection point a sit will clearly be seen and also easily dry after rain. It comes down to a matter of opinion really, maybe test out how it feels with a mockup and step over the door sill and see?

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Thank you for all recommendations, I have decided to bring it to the height of aluminium rails, so it’s additional 50mm above the ground and scrapped more soil from ground as well.

My question is I have the bearers at the house end 4mm gap from brick. How can I lay deck board directly on top of this brick line to bring it to the height of alminium rails line. Can I lay another small 30mm height timber so I can lay 19mm deck board on top. Gap is 50mm from brick line to aluminium line?

Re: How to fill gap between brick house and deck?

Hello @Ashishpra123

If you wish to place support under the deck panels that are going over the brick line, I suggest using the same decking panel as support for under the decking panel, I then suggest using Delf Assorted Builders Wedge to take up the gap between the brick and the support piece.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
