Re: What finishing to use

Hi @mansonal,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. We're pleased to have you join us.

Can you please tell us about this project? What type of materials you are using, it's purpose and whether it will be exposed to the elements outdoors will all affect the advice that the community will give you.

Many thanks,

Jason

Re: What finishing to use

Seems my description didn't post when the photos did!

Over the weekend I made this bench seat. Won't be fully in the elements but will still be outside

Made with Kwila Decking and 2x4 treated pine

Wasn't sure what to finish it with. We have Raw Linseed Oil however wondered if a polyurethane varnish would be better?

I've never used Linseed oil

Re: What finishing to use

Hi @mansonal,

You could certainly use raw linseed oil, but these days, there are products specifically designed for outdoor furniture, and they tend to offer better, longer-term protection. I'd recommend either an outdoor furniture oil or a varnish, depending on how much maintenance you're willing to do and the look you're going for.

Oils are easy to apply and maintain—you’ll typically just need to reapply once a year to keep the timber protected and looking fresh. Varnish, on the other hand, gives a beautiful, long-lasting finish and can go several years without much attention. The trade-off is that when it does eventually wear down or flake, you’ll need to sand the entire surface back before reapplying—it’s not something you can just top up like an oil.

If you’re after a glossy or highly polished look, varnish is the way to go. But if you're happy with a more natural finish and want something that’s lower maintenance over time, a quality furniture oil would be a great fit.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
