How to fix a leaking garden pond?

20250409_143737.jpg

I have a wildlife pond which is well established and teaming with life (native fish, snails, frogs, native plants etc). It has three levels with a pump circulating crystal-clear water. In otherwards the pond is in balance. However I have noticed in the past few weeks I have to constantly add water and as the weather in Melbourne is getting cooler I suspect this is not evaporation. I have switch the pump circulation off and measured the depth of water in each of the levels. The bottom level (and biggest section) seems to have the leak. The pond uses a Aquapro liner and as it is teaming with wildlife emptying the pond to replace the liner is not desirable as I am bound to injure/kill a creature or two.

My questions are:

1 Given I have done a visual search and not identified where the hole is does anyone have any tips as to how I might locate the leak?

2 Assuming I can find the leak what is the best way to fix it?

Re: Leaking Garden Pond

Hi @MJM,

It sounds like you've got a lovely, well-balanced pond, so dealing with a leak can certainly be a challenge. Finding the leak can be tricky, especially if it’s below the waterline.

Unfortunately, repairing a leak underwater can be difficult, especially without draining the pond. While there are underwater sealants available, using them in a pond that’s teeming with life can be a risky process, both for the creatures and the longevity of the repair.

Given the complexity and the fact that you’ve already tried a visual search, draining the pond to replace the liner might be the best long-term solution. I know it’s not ideal, but it would allow you to thoroughly inspect the entire liner and replace it without the worry of causing harm to the wildlife. It’s also the most effective way to ensure the issue is fully resolved.

I’ll also tag @Jewelleryrescue to see if they have any additional thoughts on finding and fixing the leak.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
