How to fix brick render?

Hey all,

I've got a bunch of sections around the outside of my house like this. Parts where the finish over the brick has just gone missing.

I've already got the paint, but how do I go about filling these in? And with the smaller ones, do I need to do anything or would it be ok to just paint over the top?

Hi @Jarrod1,

Thank you for your question about repairing some damaged render on your home.

I'd suggest you have a look at the method @Nailbag has detailed in How to repair a rendered wall as it would be the exact method I would suggest. Regardless of how small the chip is, a quick touch-up with some Polyfilla Exterior Brick and Render Filler would be worthwhile to ensure you have a nice, uniform surface.

With the hammered-in anchors, you will likely have to drill out the head or cut them off with an angle grinder so you can fill over the top of them

With that size, you'd be better off looking at How To Render because you are more or less starting from scratch.

Like with Nailbags guide, the first step is always to clean up the loose material, so you would start by chipping away any of the render that remains so you can return the step to a clean surface.

Thanks, I followed the how to render guide, just for reference I've attached the finished result. Definitely not perfect, but better than it was. It looks like I could have used more material to get an even flat finish. I know it's too late now, but for next time, how would I go about getting the finish the same as the wall on the left/right side of my job?

Hi @Jarrod1 , just looking at your post, for the finish you require, you could use render paint , I think Bunnings would sell it, I suggest you sand smooth the rough finish below the doorway, using an course sanding disc, , @JacobZ , might be able to assist you in the type of rendor paint,

Hi @Jarrod1,

If you were to do it again, I'd suggest applying more render, so it is slightly proud of the surrounding wall, then allow it to harden slightly before scraping it back with a long straight edge, such as this Masterfinish 1.8m Straight Edge or a spirit level. This will ensure you get a flat, consistent surface that aligns with the rest of the wall.

At this point, as it has cured and would be impossible to simply scrape back, you could use a random orbital sander with some 80-grit sandpaper or an angle grinder with a Flap Disc to smooth it out. This would create concrete dust, so you must wear a P2 mask, as well as gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, long protective clothing and enclosed shoes.

You could then use @JoeAzza's recommendation of render paint. I'd say this Dulux Medium Texture Exterior Paint would be the way to go.
