How to fix cracked balcony edge?

The edge of our balcony is cracking and lets water in (although so far have not noticed any leaks into the house; balcony overhangs the front patio). This was noted in the inspection report before we moved into the house. I've had trouble finding someone to fix this as it's such a small job so will likely need to fix it myself. One of the trades who came to look at it suggested duct tape over the top to stop the majority of the water seeping in, that was almost 2 years ago now and the duct tape is still there - figure it might be time to do something more permanent.

I was thinking I either try to regrout the edge but that could be quite messy.

Alternatively most of the trades suggestions have been to get a 1mm sheet of aluminium cut to size and affix that to cover the edge. This might be beyond my capabilities (don't want to drill and crack the existing balcony even more) and I've no idea where to order something like that from.

Any other suggestions?

Hi @kyap,

It sounds like a good time to tackle a more permanent fix. Before anything else, you’ll want to remove any deteriorated silicone (the grey substance previously used to fill the gap). Once that’s done, sand down the metal to remove any rust and then paint it to prevent further corrosion.

After painting, you can apply a flexible polyurethane sealant such as Sikaflex 11FC to the area to ensure a proper seal. If you’d like to improve the look of the balcony edge, adding an aluminium trim over the top is a good option. You don’t need to drill into the existing structure—simply pressing the trim onto the Sikaflex directly after it has been applied should hold it in place securely.

@MitchellMc thanks for the guidance! Few follow-up qs:

1. With removing the deteriorated silicone is there any specific suggestion how to tackle this? I'd guess any scraping tool or scalpel would do?
2. For sanding the rust, would I need a sanding tool, or would sandpaper work? Any product recommendations here would be helpful!

3. With the paint, looks like you've linked to Metalshield. Will any of the metalshield products do, and can I apply directly onto the sanded metal? Eg. https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-500ml-metalshield-epoxy-enamel-satin-black-5l_p1400576

Hi @kyap,

To remove the deteriorated silicone, a scraper or chisel should do the trick. If you encounter stubborn areas, a utility knife or sealant remover tool can help get into tighter spots.

For sanding the rust, hand sanding with medium-grit sandpaper will work, but a detail sander like the Ryobi sander will make the job much quicker and more efficient, especially if there's a larger rusted area to cover. Make sure to sand until the surface is smooth and shiny, removing all traces of rust to prevent further corrosion.

The Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Satin Black you linked is an excellent option. It's designed to provide durable protection against rust and wear, and you can apply it directly to the sanded metal. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry before painting, and apply multiple thin coats for the best coverage and longevity.

Remember to wear cut-resistant gloves when using utility knives and cut away from yourself.
