How to fix discolouration when reoiling gate timber?

1000028390.jpg

i wanted to reoil my gate timber, however there are now some discolouration after the first coat. I used Cabot Deck Clean followed by Merbau Aquadeck.

Is there any suggestion on how to make it look better? Would painting them over be a good idea?

Re: discolouration when reoiling gate timber?

Hi @antta,

The discolouration on your gate timber does look quite patchy, which often points to uneven absorption due to residue, inconsistent cleaning, or previously weathered areas. You could try reapplying Cabot’s Deck Clean—this time paired with a pressure washer—to lift any remaining contaminants and even out the surface. If that doesn’t help, Cabot’s New Timber Prep might offer a more uniform result, especially if the timber hasn’t weathered evenly.

Sanding is another option to improve consistency, though it’s not possible on the ribbed sections as you won’t get a flat, even sanding pass. As for painting over the timber, that could mask the problem entirely, but the oil you've already applied will prevent paint from adhering properly. You’d either need to let the oil weather and break down over time or strip it off with a suitable remover like the Cabot's New Timber Prep before painting.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for your reply, Cabot’s New Timber Prep sounds like a good option, I'll give it a try.
