Hello, I am looking to fix the old metal gate where the hinges have snapped off from the connection from the fence to the gate.
what would be the best course of action here? Can a welder just weld
the broken part back together or does the hinge need to be angle grinded off and a new hinge install and welded on?
Also is there other options here?
thank you
Hi @lukejames,
This is what happens when gate hinges are not lubricated.
In my case the hinge pin itself was rusted in the hinge and the pin welding gave way.
My boilermaker/welder father-in-law made the gate frames in the seventies and the hinges are welded to the frame.
Stood there thinking... don't want to get involved with welded hinges so I bought a gate hinge from Bunnings and simply changed the pin side.
Note how the pin is undersize, that's the best fit I could do - no matter.
The hole is for lubricating the gate hinge and I gave myself a kick in the backside for allowing that to happen.
Since then about twenty ago I have it in my Outlook calendar to give them a lube spray 3 time a year.
In your case you could do much the same fix.
Unlikely spray lube will be enough to loosen the pin so also try alternately between heating the hinge with a butane torch and freezing the pin with freeze spray along with tapping and turning with multigrips - to break the rust bond..
With the pin (hopefully) removed take it with you for when you browse through the gate hinges for a suitable replacement.
Cheers
Hi @AlanM52
Thank you for the insight here. Interesting the bottom hinge although not broken is also not moving if I try to close the gate it just bends the steel.
So it would make sense the due to rust, lack of use and no lubricant it has just rusted into place. I’ll give a go with the WDO40 in the hole, and attempt the heating/cooling method and provide an update shortly.
thank you for your help
Good luck.
