How to fix rusted doorframe?

Hi. Not sure how to fix this- I have read other posts that say remove as much rust as possible, use a rust converter and then use turbo metal builders bog if there’s holes. Can I still use the bog if the rust is this bad or do I have to replace the frame??

Welcome to the Bunning s Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your metal door frame.

Metal door frames are usually attached to your home for either structural purposes or fire safety regulations. I propose testing how far the rust has travelled and if it has totally eaten away the foot of the door frame. Once you've chipped away all the rust and have had a good look, you'll be able to determine if the rust damage is too severe or if it is surface rust only and can still bepatched with bog. Please post a photo update once you've removed most of the rust, we will offer our opinion regarding its condition.

I’ll scrape away and see. How hard is it to actually replace the doorframe anyway? Does Bunnings stock these? Hoping it’s an easy fix but this doorframe has been exposed to water for a long time.

Replacing your door frame is quite an involved process and will require the services of a builder. Yes, the store can supply steel door frames but must be specially ordered. It's important that you double check the size of your current door frame and speak to the special orders team regarding its availability. You also have the option of using a timber door frame on the condition that it is allowed in your area. Some places sometimes require a steel frame especially in a fire zone area. Please double check before you make any purchase.

I’ve scraped away as much rust as I can and have uploaded photos. What do you think? Can I repair this?

Thank you very much for the extra pictures. It appears that an attempt to repair this frame has been done before. Parts of the cement footing have been exposed and what is left of the frame is laid bare. Due to the extensive damage on the footing of the steel frame, I propose replacing it with a new one.

However, should you wish to explore the possibilities of repair. I suggest engaging the services of professional builder and they will be able to assess the damage more closely and provide you with a definitive answer.

Another "It needs a builder" suggestion from me as well 😕 The level of rust around the whole base of the frame has deterioated to the point its not doing its job. I have never replaced a steel frame around a doorway but put it ino a class of "Need to learn before I attempt it" type deal. Its something that you want fixed correctly the first time.

Thanks- I’ve found someone to take a look tomorrow. It’s in my too hard basket for me to do given I am a relative beginner of DIY. Really appreciate the advice everyone.
