Hi all,
I am rendering our old external brick wall. We have done 2 base coats and will do a final render texture coat. However after two coats, I can still see brick lines. Will the final render texture coat hide them? Thanks
Hello @tonytr
The brick lines showing through your render after two base coats are typically caused by uneven absorption and surface variation of the original brickwork, including the mortar joints. Bricks and mortar absorb water and render differently, bricks tend to soak it up more evenly, while mortar joints may stay drier or wetter longer, creating a visible pattern even after multiple coats. This is quite common, especially with older bricks or painted surfaces.
The good news is that the final render texture coat, if applied properly and thick enough, usually does a good job of hiding those brick lines. Texture coats contain coarser aggregates and provide a more uniform, thicker finish, which helps mask minor inconsistencies beneath. However, success depends on the type of texture finish you're using (e.g. fine vs coarse) and how it’s applied. A coarse texture or rolled-on finish will typically hide imperfections better than a very fine or sponge-finish coat.
To improve results, make sure your base coats have fully cured and are not still drying patchily. Also, ensure your final coat is applied with consistent thickness and coverage. If you're still seeing brick lines faintly after the texture coat, a second pass of the texture may be needed.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks Eric! I will try to make sure that the final coat is thick enough!
