How to fix water ingress?

hello,

after the recent cyclone there was a small area of water ingress coming from outside.

we previously had this in 2022, a tradie came to fix it and from what I can see (see image) some sort of silicone was applied to the area.

since 2022 we’ve had plenty of rain and no issues, only with this cyclone. That side of the house was hit hardest.

can anyone suggest a material to re-fill this area or how they would approach it?

Your images don't really give much context of where the water is coming from and leaking through to. What area of the house is this?

I can see a couple of water droplets on the timber to the right and then an area to the left where it appears that multiple layers of caulking have been applied over the years.

Perhaps if you provided a bit more information about this leak, our members will have some helpful suggestions.

sorry. It is the front of the house, see attached photo with area circled.

in terms of where the leak is coming from, it looks to be where the area is caulked (circled). The area is loose.

my question is what can I use to fill in this gap, would re-caulk it be ok?

As said before the area has held up ok for a few years, just took a battering this cyclone. That was the aspect facing the prevailing wind.

You could likely seal the area with silicone, @Ollie2410. However, it's a very busy corner with a bit of a complex nature. It's almost like a section of timber could be installed there to block water from getting to the point of the silicone. If you were to cut and install some timber, you could fill the cavity behind it with expanding foam to help seal the area.

sorry I am quite new to this.

what type of timber would you use, and would you fasten it with screws or a wood glue? Your idea makes sense, something with some structural integrity to protect the silicone area from the elements would give it better protection.

Would you then silicone around the outside of the wood?

Hello @Ollie2410

I suggest using 90 x 22mm Decking H3 Treated Pine to cover this exposed section. You'll need to do some measurements to see if the timber piece I suggested will fit. It can be cut and screwed into place, but before doing that, I suggest filling the gap with more silicone to seal off that section then placing the timber in front of it. If you notice gaps around the timber piece, I suggest using self-expanding foam to plug up any gaps. Once the foam cures, you can trim it down by using a craft knife.

I suggest looking at the Parfix 340g Expanding Foam Filler, it's an excellent filler, I've used it in my own home. Please don't forget to paint over the foam and timber to add that extra layer of protection.
