How to get render bead on curved bench seat?

hi there,

nearly finished building my garden fire pit bench. Want to start render next week but I did have a question about render bead. Obviously I’ve got curves on this and wondered if there are any products I can use like curved render bead suitable for outdoor rendering? Want to get clean lines (well as clean as I can get them) so really don’t want to just go free hand with no guide.

You’re on the right track wanting a bead for those curves rather than trying to go freehand. For this type of project, you could use an archway bead, which is designed to create neat, consistent edges on curved surfaces. This beading is available in the Siniat extended range, and while they’re not stocked on the shelf, the team at your local store’s Special Orders desk will be able to help you order them in. That way, you’ll get a much cleaner line and a more professional-looking finish on your fire pit bench.

You have some quite tight bends, so you might need to add some additional cuts in the beading to achieve them.

@MitchellMc One other question I was going to ask. Is there a render that you would recommend for use on seating applications like this, is there a minimum thickness as it will be sat on? We used dulux acratex system like what’s in our house exterior when doing our letter box but not sure if that would be the best choice here?

Hi @bow2021,

For seating, you'll want to have a relatively thick coat so it can better resist any pressure applied to it.

I would aim for a coating around 15mm thick, which can be achieved by using Dunlop Multipurpose Acrylic Render, which can be applied in layers up to 10mm thick, as a base coat, followed by a 5mm thick topcoat of Dunlop Fine Coat Render.

You'd want to add your bead after the base coat to ensure it sits on the prominent outside corner.

Let me tag @bow2021 so they are alerted to your question.

Taking a look at their image, it appears they've cut the blocks and used sections of them to create the curved area. They've actually done a really nice job and filled the gaps neatly with mortar. Even if a professional were to create something like this, the blocks underneath the render can at times be very rough as they are just the base form, which gets smoothed out with the render. I've created a rendering below to give you a guide on how this would be done.

Well @MitchellMc has nailed exactly what I did and shown a better example than I could have.

when it came the curved corner to bring the bench around I used the skinny besser blocks think they are 90mm wide. Just allowed me to make a tighter turn. After I lined them up I cut normal size besser blocks to fit in between the voids that were left.

I filled the whole thing with concrete so she’s pretty solid.

tools wise I just bought an ozito grinder from Bunnings for cutting the blocks. A level, trowel for mortar. I didn’t bother with a string line as it was only 2 courses high and turned out pretty good.
