hi there,
I've seen a similar workshop discussion but it doesn't exactly answer my question because the suggested products are no longer available and this is a steel beam. Note: the hooks on the beam are only magnetic hooks for lights. There is no drilled holes.
I want to hang a macrame chair swing exactly like the one attached. I have a structural steel beam in our alfresco I would like to anchor it to. As you can see I can't anchor it from the bottom or the top of the beam, it has to go on or through the face. I thought maybe some kind of anchor or diamond bolt? But I will still need a hook and carabiner. Suggestions please?
Hi @vvallejosdiy,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
We get questions about hanging things like swinging chairs and boxing bags from ceilings and roof structures fairly regularly, and unfortunately, the answer is usually the same. If you wanted to hang your swing chair from this location, you would need to have it inspected and given the go ahead by a suitably licensed person, such as a structural engineer.
This is because the roof structure was not originally designed to support the live loads that would be applied to the structure when the swing is in motion and weight-bearing.
While I understand it might seem overkill, there is potential that any alterations to the structure would weaken it, and the swinging motion could exacerbate this even further. An engineer will be able to give you an answer and a suitable mounting solution with confidence that it will not fail and cause further issues.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more assistance, please let me know if you have any further questions.
Jacob
