How to install Ekodeck castellated panels onto retaining wall?

Good Morning Everyone,

I am just after some help with the installation of the new Ekodeck Castellated Panels. We are having a pool installed in the grass area in the photos attached and I would like to screen the area out. What would be the best way to approach this for it to cover the concrete retaining wall and fence also. The height fits within the height that the panels come in but attaching it to the wall would need some sort of frame in front of it? I know in the installation guide it says not to attach it to a concrete wall. I have reached out to Ekodeck without any luck.

I was thinking about maybe creating a timber frame for the panels to be screwed onto but I was after some expert advise as to what is best and the best way to build something like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about installing Ekodeck Castellated Panels on your fence.

I propose installing 75 x 38mm 4.8m Fence Rail H3 Treated Pine Wet Sawn on your side of the fence and anchoring the Ekodeck Panels to the rails. The possible drawback to this plan is that if your side of the fence is heavier, it's possible that weight of your panels will drag the fence your way creating a lean.

Another way is to put 100 x 100mm 2.4m Fence Post Hardwood CCA into the soil in front of the concrete retaining wall. You then attach rails to them and install the Ekodeck panels as if they were the fence palings. This would be the most secure way of installing the panels without affecting your current fence and retaining wall.

Looking at your photos I am wondering how the fence posts and the retaining wall posts are joined? 🙂 Not necasary for my idea but interested all the same.

I like the second option @EricL has mentioned as I am always reluctant to attach anything to a fence for that "leaning" over reason. The one thing Id change is to put the posts in between the retaining wall posts as you will have less likelyhood of hitting concrete when digging the holes.

Oh MAN! Just had a search for the "Ekodeck Castellated Panels" and WOW! Love them! They look really nice and will cover the retaining wall and fence nicely. I would run two rails or even three between the posts and then secure the panels to the rails. Thye really dont look heavy but im still cautious about old fences/retaining walls.

Would love to see some project pics as you install them. You have potentailly just solved what i want to do with my back fence 🙂

May I ask what fixings did you use to fix the timber rails to the metal post ? Front fixing withscrews or with some sort of brackets behind to provide stronger support ?

Were the metal post hollow ? and what size were the post and plates (to anchor into the concrete ) ?

These are all good questions, I believe Neil used hollow steel fence posts, they could possibly be the Australian Handyman Supplies 89 x 89mm x 3.0m Galvanised Steel Fence Post. I'm fairly confident that they used Self Tapping Metal Screws, but we'll need to wait for confirmation from Neil what size they used for the timber rails and what kind of baseplate was used for fixing the post the ground.

If you are building a similar project, please remember to post a photo update. I'm sure our members will be keen to see how you laid out your Ekodeck castellated panels.

I'm hoping to clarify a point regarding installation of the castellated panels (which look amazing in the photos!).

I read the instructions for installation which say to pre drill and then fix using 10g screws. I can't however see any screws in the pictures that you have posted. Did you use black screws? And did you do anything in particular to make them hidden? I imagine the usual external galvanised screws would show as a row of silver tops which is not something I wish to have. Your advice is appreciated!

I have used black permanant marker to colour in the head of silver screws when I built my snooker table. Not sure how it would go in the weather but it really blended in nicely.

Appreciate the advice. I've done that for indoor stuff in a pinch but would worry that outside it will come off pretty fast! In the end I bought black screws which worked well. I've put together some photos and will make a post about putting up the panels where I will cover options as I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere?

From the images, it appears that a simple butt joint was used where one panel meets the face of the other. It doesn't look like any corner or joining piece was used

Sorry for the late replies I haven’t been notified of any notifications so didn’t know people had replied. Thanks for the kind words we love it.
in regards to the questions about the posts drilling into the ground, J.C Fencing & Outdoor did this for me so feel free to reach out to him.

The screws hide behind the panels and interlock into each other providing a flush finish. The corner areas there is info on the Ekodeck website regarding this, or at least there was.

I have added some solar lights from Hoselink and and used the remaining panels as a cover for our 15m raised garden bed, giving it a complete feel.
