How to install a side entrance gate?

I would like to install a side access gate. I found a gate product - link below. However i could not find suitable post for hanging this gate. I am thinking to find a  suitable post anchor onto concrete block which will be buried in the ground. Could someone guide me please if this is the correct way or there is a full package including post is available on bunnings.

Re: Backyard side entrance gate

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @hsxlzyc. It's fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question on installing a gate.

The panel you’ve linked is a slatted screen, not a gate, so it may not have the rigidity to act as a gate over time. It’s designed to be stationary, and if attached on only one side to swing like a gate, it could twist, sag, or even come apart. I'd recommend you consider something like the SpecRite 1833 x 900mm Pre-Oiled Merbau Horizontal Slat Gate instead.

For a proper gate, the hinges need to be mounted on a strong post. Suitable post options include galvanised steel, treated pine, or hardwood like merbau, depending on your budget and style preference. It’s best to concrete these posts directly into the ground to a depth of around 400–600 mm to ensure they are sturdy enough to support the weight and movement of a gate. If you choose timber, painting the part that will be buried with bitumen paint adds extra protection against decay.

Using a post footer or bracket bolted into the ground is generally not strong enough for a gate, as it won’t provide the rigidity needed over time.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Backyard side entrance gate

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks for the prompt reply. This gate looks great. Would you be able provide a link for hinges and lock ?

I do have some H4 post at home which was left from my decking project.

Thank you

Re: Backyard side entrance gate

Something like these Pinnacle 16mm Galvanised LH Double Butt Security Gate Hinges would work fine @hsxlzyc. Lockwise, you have some choices depending on what features you need. The most basic option would be a latch with a padlock, or you could opt for a more sophisticated solution, such as a digital gate lock.
