How to install bamboo panels along the fence?

I have bought few bamboo panels (2.4x1 m) which I'm going to install along the wooden fence that I've. The fence has horizontal timber batton/support plancks on my side. I have put up a panel along the fence and I think I can fix screws through the support timber at the back of the panel but on the top I think I will have to go through the bamboos as it will be well above the fence. I've the following question before I start:

Do I need to apply primer/paint on the backside of the panels (not the one showing in the picture) though bamboo is very resilient.
Do I really need to put timber rails/batons behind these to screw them to the fence? I have wooden fence and don't have the plain side. So I have three horiozontal supports on my side. The bottom and middle supports behind the pannels will line up with the ones on fence. The top one will be above the fence anyways.

Hi @diyer_amature,

You don't necessarily need to prime or paint the back of the bamboo panels — bamboo is quite resilient as you mentioned — but sealing them with a clear exterior-grade oil could definitely help extend their life, especially since moisture can still cause them to weather over time.

As for the fixing, if your horizontal fence rails line up reasonably well with the panels, you should be fine screwing directly through the bamboo and into those rails. There’s no absolute need to add additional battens unless you feel the panels need extra support to stay flat and rigid. Where the top of the panels sits above the fence and there’s no rail behind it, you’ll need to either screw straight through the bamboo (which will be visible) or fix a horizontal batten higher up to support the top of the panel properly — that’ll help avoid sagging over time.
