How to install weatherboard fencing?

Thank you for sharing your question about giving your fence a weatherboard look. I suggest having a look at the James Hardie 4200 x 150 x 16mm Linea™ Weatherboard. It gives you the traditional look of thick timber weatherboard but with all the advantages and strength of fibre cement.

Here are some handy step-by-step guides:

In regards to your posts, you could use some H4 90x45 and paint them white to give the illusion that the posts are actually placed on the outside of the weatherboard fence. For the fence and post capping you can use H3-treated timber in the size that you need. Before you begin, I recommend double-checking the amount of weatherboard you'll be needing so that you'll have exactly what you need.

This looks like a good option of material. I'll have to have a look in person to figure which one looks and works best.

From what I can see in the installation guide I need framing to hang the panels off. I'm planning for it to to be in line with the horizontals (70x45) so the existing posts stand proud.

I figure the new framing will also transfer the load of the panels to the ground at the bottom (existing slab and mini post in ground), reducing reliance on the existing posts (existing slab and mini post in ground

What do you think of this as an initial layout?

Hi @diy_hausdesigns,

Unless the new frame is freestanding, it will only partially transfer the load directly to the ground. It would be best if you wedge the framing pieces inside the fence's horizontal rails.

H3 70 x 45mm Pine is not suitable to be concreted into the ground. You'd need H4 timber, typically only available in H4 posts. You could place plastic shims under the lower framing timbers to keep them slightly off the existing slab.

You can use treated Pine screws to connect your framing sections to the existing rails. You could also reinforce these joints with galvanised brackets.

Your initial layout looks fine, and it appears like it will work well for your project.

A bit more progress with the cladding fencing project

Learning quickly how to work with the FC cladding and jointing compound.

Next stage is to install the weatherboarda on the right side.

Was initially planning on weatherboards at the left end but decided it'll be overkill and less costly continuing with the FC cladding.

Man that fence is looking good, I wasnt sure at first but you have sold me on the idea! For the jointing of the sheets, is the compound like plaster and applied like plaster? Its one part I hadnt thought of.

Glad to hear this project has inspired you. Dunlop has a FC jointing product that is pre-mixed and easy to use and yes, pretty much applied like plaster out of a bucket. Also make sure you get the FC jointing tape. The stuff can crack if you don't use the tape.

Bugger! Now I want to go home and fix up my old painted blue colourbond fence around part of the pool 🙂 That is coming up so nicely.

I have another question lol, So the weatherboard panels look pretty nice, the flat paneling is under them? And if so Is that what you need to do to install the weatherboard sheets? or are you having it to define an area?

I am just defining the area with the weatheboards, where the deck will eventually line up to. There is no FC sheeting behind the weatherboards, just the timber framing built into the fence to mount the weatherboards.

Just in case you're wondering what those products are, the FC joint compound is the Dunlop 3kg Fibre Cement Jointing Compound and the tape is called the Builders Edge 50mm x 90m Alkali Resistant Render Fibre Cement Tape.

Finally finished installing the FC weatherboard and the rest of the FC sheets. This includes a screen for the hot water unit and bins.

Next we'll paints it all, build a deck and lay fresh new turf but for now, we are super happy with it.

Firstly, thank you for your help and encouragement on this project. Really was out of my depth but here it is.

Finally completed the weatherboard and FC sheet fencing project. We also laid some turf which should hopefully settle in well.

Here are some snaps from over the weekend when we applied the textured coat to the FC panels.

That has certainly come up so nicely! Especialy from what it was to what you have now! 🙂 That is a vast improvement! It streamlines your yard and makes it your own. As usual you have made me think about one of my side fence areas and how I want to makethe fence higher. I think paneling it like you have might be the way to go. I have had that thought many times "biting off more then I can chew" and each time I tell myself to breath and break it down to smaller steps. It dosnt look like you were outa your depth 🙂

Hopefully @diy_hausdesigns can let you know about the products they used. We do have a couple of products with which you can get a similar result. There's the Dunlop 12.5L Render Texture Coat - Colorbond Dune, or for a similar effect, you can go with a painted coating such as Dulux 10L Texture Full Cover Exterior Paint.

I used the Dunlop product in surfmist colour and the FC was 7mm if my memory serves me correctly.

I recommend a bit of patience with the render paint and just getting the right application too.

Thanks for this..both of these products require a float/ trowel application. Is there any other texture based product that can just be rolled on? The texture paint says rolling on is fine but then needs finishing by trowel.

I have some experience with rendering but I have a big area to cover and would like a quicker approach. Any suggestions? Thanks.
