How to lay paving to allow water to run away?

Hey all. I have an area approx 1.6m x 12m that I want to pave. One side of the area is the house and the other side is a small retaining wall. This distance is 1.6m wide. In the middle between the house and the retaining wall is a series of drains positioned about 2m apart along the 12m distance.

i know that I need to angle the paving 1-2 degs away from the house to allow water to run away from the house.
my question is should I also angle the paving away from the retaining wall at 1-2 degs to allow the water to run back into the middle towards the drains to form a shallow V between the house and the wall or just angled away from the house?

any advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like you’re on the right track with angling the paving 1–2 degrees away from the house to help direct water runoff. Given that you’ve got drains positioned along the middle, it would make sense to create a shallow V shape between the house and the retaining wall. By angling both sides slightly toward the centre, the water will naturally flow down into the drains rather than pooling near the house or wall.

This approach should help manage any water that would otherwise collect along the edges. Just make sure that the slope is gradual and consistent along both sides so that the water smoothly channels toward the drains. This setup will provide good drainage, helping keep both your house and retaining wall dry.

hello again,

thanks for the info. To further this question, as we have selected the pavers, the size of the pavers means i will have a 20cm wide paver located centrally across the centre line. this means the shallow V that was discussed previously will now have sloped sides with a flat base of 10cm each side of centre. that means ie 1to2 deg slope from house and wall to a flat base 10cm either side of centre to allow for the paver. I hope this diagram helps.

Should the road base be level from side to side ie all the way through and only the bedding sand should be sloped, or should the road base be sloped as well to match the three angles needed?

Will having a three different angles for screening cause any issues that you know of ?

Hi @dweller,

The slope could be achieved with the sand, roadbase or a combination of both. It's likely going to be easier to have the roadbase level and use the sand to achieve the slope.
