How to level slope against fence?

Hello, we have this slight downward slope in our backyard to the fence. It isn’t huge but it make this space unusable.

How can this area be levelled against the fence? We need a cost effective option.

Is there a way to do it without taking the fence down? Build a garden bed that acts as a retaining wall to level soil?

Thank you

Jordyn

Re: How to level slope against fence?

Hi @jordynhilton

You could certainly create a retaining wall along the sides and rear of the area to level out the slope. To properly retain the soil, you’ll need to even out the slope first. Looking at your photos, the wall would likely need to be at least 400mm high, though the exact height will depend on your yard’s highest point and where you want a level surface.

You can install the retaining wall without removing the fence. You’ll just need to set it back slightly from the fence, leaving a gap between the wall and the fence, which will give you enough room to concrete in the footings for the posts. A system like the Retain It system can be very helpful, as it allows you to slot the sleepers in after the posts are installed.

One important point is to check with your local council regarding requirements. Depending on the height and proximity to your boundary, the wall may need to be engineered. It’s best to confirm this before starting, as installing a retaining wall that close to a fence without approval could cause issues later.

When it's time to fill the area, you might like to speak with our Special Orders team in-store. In many locations, we offer bulk fill delivered to your home.

Here's a helpful guide: How to build a timber retaining wall.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
