How to paint a concrete wall?

I've just moved into a property that had a very poorly painted wall in the backyard. Most of it was peeling and many of the joins were cracked. I've pressure washed what remained to expose the raw concrete so that I can repaint it anything but the horrible bright red that it was before.

Can anybody advise on what I need to do to prep the wall? I'm new to outdoor painting. I believe the material is concrete and there are gaps that need filling but I'm unsure of what is best (and cheapest) to fill it before I paint!

Prepping your backyard concrete wall properly will make a huge difference in how well your new paint lasts, especially since the previous coat was peeling. Since you've pressure washed it and exposed the raw concrete, you're off to a good start.

First, you'll need to fill any gaps or cracks. If the cracks are small (hairline), a flexible exterior gap filler like Selleys No More Gaps Exterior should do the trick. For larger gaps or deep cracks, a mortar repair compound like Dingo Fast Set Mortar or the Dunlop 10kg Rapidset Repair Mortar would be better. Make sure the filler is fully cured before painting.

Next, check the surface for any loose debris, dust, or chalky residue. A mild wash with water and detergent along with a bristle brush can help clean the surface for better adhesion. If there are stubborn mould stains, an exterior cleaner like 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner can help.

Once clean and dry, apply a high-quality exterior paint that can handle moisture and weather conditions, like Dulux Weathershield.
