Good afternoon. Could you please tell me how you paint a cement fibreglass outdoor pot? and what paint and primer sealer etc. I would use please Do you have to prime it as well and do you seal the inside with clear sealer
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @helenrahu. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting pots.
There aren’t any paints I am aware of specifically for fibreglass resin pots, so it's hard to guarantee long-term adhesion. However, many people do paint them with reasonable success if the preparation is done correctly. The most important step is to thoroughly clean the pot by scrubbing it with soapy water, rinsing it with fresh water, and allowing it to dry completely. This removes dust, residue, or loose material that would otherwise prevent the paint from sticking.
Once the surface is clean, you could try using spray paint, as spray finishes tend to bond better to smooth and non-porous surfaces like fibreglass. It’s always a good idea to test a small hidden section first to check how well it adheres. Alternatively, you could use a water-based exterior enamel if you prefer a brush-on option, though it may not last as long as spray paint. There is no need to seal the inside of the pot with a clear sealer unless you want an extra layer of protection against water absorption.
Because fibreglass resin is such a slick surface, the paint finish may not be permanent, but with good preparation and the right product, you can achieve a result that looks great and lasts for a reasonable period of time outdoors.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
